Back in the late 80s, Nancy Cox recollects a sewing machine her former mother-in-law, at the time, had gifted her which sparked her interest in sewing. She would later become a member of the National Costumers Association where she would often take advantage of the workshops and classes offered to learn how to improve her sewing skills and learn about the true art of costume design. As time went on, Nancy would create everything from mascot costumes, period piece dresses and all sorts of wild requests from her clients.
Eventually, she made the move back to her hometown of Garden City whereas a self-taught costume designer started her own costume design business right from her living room. As word-of-mouth got out about her talents, her clientele outgrew her living room space and she then relocated to her father’s garage down the road from her house. Then in 1992, Nancy decides to follow her passion and open-up a costume shop in a warehouse space on U.S. Highway 80, where it’s currently located today and celebrating its 26 years of business in Garden City, GA.
ACME Costumes is more than just your Halloween headquarters store, they are here year-round to serve all of their customers’ needs. The store holds one of the largest collection of costumes and accessories in the Coastal Empire and the Low Country. Including over 350 original costume pieces designed and handsewn by Nancy herself. Additionally, they offer costume rental options, custom design work, and on-site make-up artist and wig master services.
She attributes her startup success to providing great customer service and being able to grant her clients’ wishes. She states, “I love it and it’s a passion of mine. I like to see my customers happy. So, come on down and will take care of yah!”
